DSVN (Duong Sat Viet Nam) runs an extensive system across the country with the most important route linking Hanoi with Ho-Chi-Minh (Saigon) some 1725km to the south. Various other lines head out of Hanoi to Haiphong (100km), two lines run to the Chinese border, northwest to Lao-Cai and northeast to Dong Dang. Another line runs to the tourist town of Halong (for the Halong Bay protected area).

These lines have a mix of gauges with 1000mm Narrow Gauge and 1435mm Standard Gauge. Some places and depots are dual gauged.

Railway enthusiasm is not really a concept that has yet been grasped in Vietnam and photography is rarely welcomed
