Portugese Railways comprised both Broad Gauge and Metre Gauge. The photos in the Steam pages are all confined to Northern Portugal The Broad Gauge line north of Porto carried on to Ermesinde where the Duoro Valley line branched off to run through to Regua and Barca D'Alva (Spanish Border) and then northwards to the other border with Spain at Valenca and Vigo via Nine (branch to Braga), Trofa, Lousado and Viana do Castelo. The line beyond Pochino to the Spanish Border at Barca D'Alva closed from May 17, 1981. The Metre Gauge was based on Porto Trindade station with the main line going via Avenida Da Franca where the Metre Gauge shed (Boa Vista) was located and on to Senhora da Hora where the line split and ran to Matasinhos to the west, Povoa de Varzim to the north and to Trofa and Lousado to the north east. From Povoa de Varzim there was a branch line to Famalicao where it joined the main Broad Gauge line and ran as a dual gauge line as far as Trofa. South of Famalicao on the dual gauge line was Lousado where the Metre Gauge line continued to Guimaraes and Fafe. Much of this is now part of the Porto Suburban network. The Metre Gauge line from Lousado to Guimaraes has been converted to Broad Gauge The Broad Gauge Douro Valley line had feeder Metre Gauge lines from Livracao to Amarante and Arco de Baulhe (closed Amarante to Arco de Baulhe on January 01, 1990),Regua to Vila Real and Chaves (closed Vila Real to Chaves on January 01, 1990), Tua to Mirandela and Braganca (Mirandela to Braganca closed on December 15, 1991) and Pocinho to Duas Igrejas (Miranda da Duoro) closed on May 17, 1981. The current CP timetable shows Livracao to Amarante, Regua to Vila Real and Tua to Mirandela only. The last Broad Gauge steam working was on March 25, 1977 All the shots in the Portugal Steam pages are courtesy of Alan Short - who retains the copyright Broad Gauge B17 4-6-0 No.282 at Regua on September 24, 1972 Broad Gauge B17 4-6-0 No.284 with Metre Gauge tank E215 on September 24, 1972 at Regua dual gauge shed E209 at Chaves on Train 6426 16:23hrs to Regua, Portugal on September 14, 1977 0-4-0T No.002 at Contumil shed on June 09, 1972
