Bacchus Marsh is on the Broad Gauge line between Melbourne and Ballarat. It has become a mecca for rail enthusiasts as it has lots of semaphore signals and an intensive loco hauled passenger service at peak hours. These V Line commuter services to and from Melbourne are hauled by Class A, N and P locos. Early morning services to Melbourne were difficult to photograph but the evening return trains proved to be excellent. The evening services terminated at Bacchus Marsh and lined up in the sidings adjacent to the station ready for the morning exodus. These sidings were completely open to all but there were no signs of graffiti on either coaches or locos - what a change from the situation in the U.K.! Bacchus Marsh is a lovely town set in a highly fertile valley, and its main purpose is fruit and vegetable growing. It is a good base from which to visit all the lines to the west and north of Melbourne, and I can personally recommend the Bacchus Marsh Avenue Motel. The main attraction are the services hauled by the classic A class locos. Here loco A 60 hauls the 18:18hrs arrival into Bacchus Marsh on Jan. 14, 2002 A60 heads the stock into the sidings after unloading the passengers It then ran round the stock P Class locos in old style V Line livery top and tail a complete set of coaches in the same livery on January 14, 2002 as they come off the single line incline into the station area.
